“I’m both a talent buyer and an artist’s agent. I sympathise with both roles. The most interesting part is contributing to the development of artists’ careers — especially the ones doing something different. Both roles are excessively focused on the short term and insufficiently on the longer term. There could be much closer cooperation between the artist’s and promoter’s sides. How and why not are interesting questions.”
Nick Hobbs is the founder of Charmenko, Charmworks & Charm Musics Turkey, Serbia, Croatia-Slovenia, Hungary, Czechia-Slovakia and Poland. He’s a concert promoter and talent buyer who’s been specialized in Eastern Europe since the early 80’s. His artists’ agency, Charmworks, works with an eclectic roster of artists from all over the world. He also has a parallel life as a music & theatre maker, writer, dance & yoga teacher, green activist and photographer.
In 2024, the gigs he probably enjoyed the most were The Smile in Belgrade, and Macklemore in Bratislava. He came into music thanks to having his mind blown by Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band when he was 16, though music was part of his life for years before that.
